Video Interview with Scott Kelby

By mattk on Tuesday, October 7th, 2008 at 1:01 am | Lightroom Tips.

I sat down with Scott Kelby (author of the new Lightroom 2 Book for Digital Photographers) to talk about his new book. Before we go any further, let me say that this was totally my idea because I wanted to try to pump Scott’s ego up as far as I could. See, when Scott’s in a good mood he gets really generous with his photo gear and I love photo gear… (and I’m totally just kidding here). Seriously, this was my idea for two reasons: 1) I’ve been getting a lot of questions from people to see if this 2nd version of the book is the same as the first and, 2) I honestly believe it’s the best book out there. I realize you have choices out there when it comes to which book to buy and with things getting a little tighter these days, I truly believe this is the book that will help you the most. I personally watched a “this’ll take a few weeks” timeline turn into double that because of Scott’s dedication to writing and rewriting each tutorial in the book, as well as finding photos that best demonstrated the tutorial. But it even trickled down to what to name a tutorial to make it as easy as possible for you, the reader, to quickly get to the concepts you wanted to learn without sifting through page after page. Anyway, enough talk (or words I guess). See for yourself and watch the 6 minute video.

Oh yeah, don’t forget about the contest at the end. Just leave a comment here that says “Hi!” or something about the book if you already have it (or are thinking of getting it) and I’ll pick a winner at the end of the week.

Oh yeah (again), make sure you scroll down for another weekly worth-a-click post.

    Hi Matt!

Honestly, pretty much most of the things I’ve learned about digital photography with regards to Lightroom and Photoshop I’ve learned from you and Scott. When my friends ask me how I do a certain technique I always refer them to either your or Scott’s website. Here’s hoping I win!

    Hi

I would already have bought a new book on 1.1 - skipping back and forth between the book and the pdf update wasn’t a lot of fun. Having all the new and old stuff dealth with in an integrated manner will certainly be a worthwhile upgrade.

    Hi! (for the contest).

I was sure not to buy Scott’s new LR2 book. Not because of the quality, but my wife will kill me for buying another photography book ;-) I’ve got already few shelves of those books.

But your talk about the brushes made me curious, so I think ‘ll have to persuade my wife ;-))

Yes, I’ll be getting the book. Just skimmed through but as you say, the Adjustment Brush chapter is worth the price. While I could possibly discover all its little tricks myself, why invent the wheel? $27 isn’t much for the head start into this and other Lightroom 2 improvements.

Only problem could be when you, Matt, bring out your Lightroom 2 book. Not sure how the piggy bank is feeling at the moment :-)

  27. Saema said,

    Hey Matt,

I just took delivery of the book this weekend, already zooming my way through it as I used Scott’s v1 book to learn Lighroom initially. Also attending some of your classes at Photoshop World in Florida 08.

I’m based in London and not many people know about the fantastic writing style you Photoshop guys have. I know if it wasn’t for the “humour” in your writing I’d probably be using the books as door stops…but you’ll be glad to know they have pride of place next to my PC…couldn’t do without them.

BTW - Matt’s Layer’s book is pretty awesome, but then if your reading this post you’ll already know that ;-)

    Hi, :-)

Well i’m not sure if the competition goes for Europeans, but about Lightroom: I think it is a great program to work with if you just have to do adjustments of photo’s. I don’t work with the websitemodule of printmodule much, but it did make me switch to shooting in RAW. Of course for me, beginner, I am a part of the photoshop vs lightroom discussion. But maybe it is just the kind of work usually need to do that makes me more of a Photoshop man. I have Kelby’s book for Digital Photographers and CS3 witch I thought was very helpfull and had great tips.

I hope you visit Belgium real soon!

    Regards,
    Mario

You and Scott produce the best stuff. I’d tried LR 1 but stuck with ACR however when LR2 came out, I tried the trial after seeing the video’s on NAPP. I purchased LR2 with limited knowledge of catalogs, collection, etc, the stuff that makes it so useful. I bought Scott’s book and love it. I had thousands of images from a recent trip to Alaska, using LR2 and what Scott book taught me, I was able to get those organized, picked and finally can start editing those that made the cut. Keep up the great video’s and tutorials!

    Hi Matt!
Aside from the contest reason for commenting :) I only recently found your blog and up until that point have been teaching myself to in regards to LR. Needless to say I was struggling a bit with the overwhelming aspect of figuring it all out on my own.
Well, after only a couple weeks I have downloaded all of your available videos on here and have gone through the archives post by post learning not only from you but also from you readers…this blog has been such a blessing to me! The teaching style of both you and Scott is so helpful and straightforward for beginners such as myself.
I am continually impressed with LR, Adobe and all of the opportunities to learn from the from those that use it and love it.
Thanks for doing such a fantastic job with this blog and creating a place where photographers can support and help one another!
I can only imagine how frustrated I would still be otherwise.

As usual, I enjoyed listening to your conversation with Scott. I hope that I get a free copy of the book since I just received my Lightroom 2 software and I sure could use the help provided by Scott’s book. I now own three of Scott’s books and one the things that I like most with this author is his sense of humour.

I received the lightroom 2 book a couple of weeks ago as a result of the Niagara Falls, Ontario photo walk. Extremely well written, would recommend it to anyone wanting to learn lightroom. In fact, when I received the book I didn’t actually have lightroom. I was of the camp where I didn’t see why I needed it or would use it, since I was using bridge with photoshop. The book helped changed my mind. Now I just have to get some more ram for my computer to hopefully speed things up a bit. :)

I have the first Lightroom book and I loved it.. it was a fun read and easy to follow along. I also purchased the new book and am enjoying it.. learning how to use the adjustment tool in Lightroom 2.0 has dramatically improved my workflow as I don’t have to go to Photoshop as often. And when I do, it’s so much easier now!

I heard Scott tease you about canoe photos in Banff. Check out my shot in my gallery - “my travels” :)

Keep up the great work in helping us photographers!

I have got both of Scott’s Lightroom books. I am just about finishing reading Evening’s latest book and then I shall study Scott’s. BTW when read in conjunction I think each author has complementary styles.

When I read your Layers book, Matt, and also Scott’s works, because of your video outputs I can hear your voices in my mind as I read your words, which I find is kinda cool!

I’ve been thinking about getting the book, but I guess I’ll wait until this contest is over :)

    Hi Matt,

I just posted on Scott’s blog this morning about how much I depend on you, Dave and Scott. I’m an instructor of all things Adobe out here and I rely on your three for soooooo much of MY training to relay to others. I use your textbooks all the time (your layers book is required in my PS class), and lean heavily on your Killer Tips for nuggets in my classroom. Thanks for all you do. I’ve met Dave twice, apparently he’s the only one brave enough to come to NC - but I do hope to meet you and Scott someday in the future.

Thanks again for everything you do,
    Chris

You know how much I love your Layers book(we talked) and I said at that time that I felt your book was the best one from all the NAPP writers that I have read (almost all) but I am afraid I have to say now that this one is right up there with yours. When I go out for coffee I take the book and just flipping through the pages I ALWAYS pick up a tip or new idea. The book is crammed full of good advice . I don’t know how he got so much in one book.

I am a devoted LR user since the first version, bought the book back then and learned a lot , attended the Lightroom tour in Tampa, and bought the second book 2 weeks ago when Borders got it in stock withouth thinking twice about it. Scotts’ books are very informative always filled with clever tips and tricks, but most of all very easy to understand and put all the info to use with a better understanding of what your doing and how to process your images to get the best results. I have even learned how to deal with his wierd sense of humor (I go right past it)LOL. So Matt let me know if I’ve sucked up enough to Scott and if there is ever any photo gear he wants to pass on and you have already got it or have no use for , I will be glad to take it off your hands. Your blog also is something I faithfully follow and look forward to seeing your new entries every week.

    Matt,

I’ve had the book for about two weeks now and have found it very instructive - just like Scott’s previous books. I like his style and down to earth approach that allows the reader to easily understand both the concept he’s trying to put forth, as well as, the step-by-step approach.

My only issue is, like others, getting the Adjustment Brush to respond quickly enough and not lock up the program. Everything else runs quite smoothly.

    Best regards,

    Jerry

The book is pretty great so far and I’ve only just read through the organization stuff!! Things I never would of thought to do.. I always was avoiding doing anything with my photo’s because I thought it would be too much work with so many but after reading the first couple chapters it’s a much more simple task then I ever thought.

As for Matt keep up the great site and books. The teeth whitening adjustment brush you made makes it crazy easy!! Thanks

I’ve got a quick question here Matt about Lightroom - when I’m previewing my images, they have great pop, but once it finishes rendering the higher quality, the image just drops off and is fairly flat - which one is the image from my camera? If the second one is (after rendering) is there some way to apply the presets or something that lightroom seems to apply for the lower rez previews?

    Thanks very much.

saying hi, just bought the book based on the reviews i read on Amazon and other sites. Can’t wait to discover it in the mail box.
Just like most of the other books by Scott, I bet this will be another killer indeed. Got to admit Matt, I don’t have a book from you, yet. So next time, interview yourself and do this same ‘contest’ again ;-)

Just a thanks to Scott for the Lightroom 2 book.
It really hit on topics important to me like working from an external drive and multiple catalogs.

I highly recommend this book to accelrate the learning curve. I use to be a Capture NX2 user until Lightroom2 and this book.

    Hey Matt and Scott!
I took a course in Photoshop 7 several years ago and have to say i have learned a TON more from Matt’s Layers book and his website and Scott’s books. I just bought his LR1 book last November, which seems kinda silly, so would love an LR2 book. tks again for so many tips…just love that adjustment brush. Feels like the darkroom all over again!

Took the book to read while having down time in Tokyo, even though it weighs a ton in the luggage. Selective editing and TATS are worth the price of software and the book itself. Not a regular user, but the section on flobotnor was impressive also. And yes, Scott, the bold shortcuts are worth the ink when you are seaching for them.

    Hello Matthew:

When it comes to imparting complex ideas and knowledge to a wide audience, it is the ability to communicate to a broad range of people: both the new user as well as the seasoned professional in a successful way that makes You, Scott and the Team stand out.

Oh, and the ability of us viewers to take a 6-minute video of Scott’s knees…

    Best wishes: Anthony.

    Hi Matt and Scott,

This is the first of Scott’s books that I have bought, so I can’t comment on the first version. This book is great - well laid out, very readable and written from regular working use of Lightroom2, with plenty of tips. I could spread the word with another copy!

…So we can just say hi? Well, let’s go a little bit beyond and say “salut !” from a guy from France AND canada (the BC part that is). I must say there isn’t much Photoshop, Lightroom, etc. going on around where I am (Fernie) except once in a year (ok maybe twice) in Calgary (4hrs away) so I gotta pretty do everything online. So thanks for all the shows, the blogs, the tutorials, NAPP and everything else you guys (Scott, Dave (at least one Canadian), R.C., Corey and the whole crew) do online. It’s wonderful… and I’m working on being able to teach all this things to (I think I know quite a bit) and maybe do it in French too. We lack a lot of Adobe teaching material in French.
    Thanks and Salut again,

From a French Guy that’s know never to write… (except this time)

    Cheers ;)

    Matt,
I do have Scott’s first book and after the video I have a better understanding of why I could/should get the new book. I do have a question for you as to your video tutorials versus Scott’s book. I have not signed up yet for the online classes, so I could use your help in deciding what are the differences in what you cover and what’s in the book; what’s your recommendation if I can’t do both as the money now is a little tighter. Is it possible to understand Lightroom 2 with the Lightroom 1 book and your online classes?

Thanks for all you do on LR Killer Tips. I’m new at this and you explain everything really well.

Just takes 1GB internal memory after some adjustments, oops, was not allowed to tell.. kidding. Great software, waiting what will be improvements in next versions.
