Will those Camera Profiles (video from last week) from the Adobe Labs website work with JPEGs too?
No, sorry about that. I recorded that video and realized after it was up that I didn’t say that they don’t work on JPEGs. They only work for raw and DNG files.
Matt, what camera and lenses do you use?I use a Nikon D300 with the MD-10 battery grip. My lens are (all Nikon by the way):
• 17-55 f/2.8
• 70-200 VR f/2.8
• 105 Macro VR f/2.8
• 50 mm f/1.4
• 24-70 f/2.8
• 18-200 f/3.5-5.6
Matt, you posted some Hawaii photos the other week. What lens was used to take the “Another Sunrise” photo? How about the one of the little girl?
Believe it or not, 90% of every photo I took in Hawaii was with the Nikon 18-200 VR lens. Some people say it’s not as sharp but I think it holds up just fine and you can’t tell in my prints. There’s definitely a place for the better glass, but when I was walking around shooting everything from my kids boogy boarding to beautiful landscapes that lens really came in handy and I would have missed many opportunities if I didn’t have it.
Matt, why won’t you address the issues and bugs with Lightroom 2?
Mainly because I simply don’t have them. I can’t write about them if I don’t experience them myself. I do see some sluggishness with the Adjustment Brush but it’s not prohibitively slow for me. I usually just have to wait a few seconds for it to render. I have done just what I recommend everyone does and made mention of it over at the Adobe forums. I know they read them and that seems to be the best place.
I have a bunch of raw files on an external disk, which I connect to my laptop when I want to work on them. I am wondering, is there a way to work on the thumbnails (global exposure corrections, not meta-data) without being connected to the external hard drive?
Unfortunately no. You can do most things in the Library module to them (keywords, metadata, sorting, etc…) but you can’t do any Develop module things to your photos until you reconnect the hard drive.
That’s just a few Q&A’s but I’ve got a big list. Gotta go get ready for one of my classes though! If you’re at Photoshop World make sure you stop by and say hi.

Is there a short cut to finish with an adjustment brush?? or do you have to click close every time? I’ve search long and hard to see if there is. Return does not work on my Mac.

Your mention of the problems people are having with LR2 caused me to wonder how you got your copy? Did you download it or get a shrink wrapped version like a typical user? If you didn’t, consider doing that and see if you have similar problems with your copy.

Not sure whether I understand you right, but I guess what you want can be simply achieve by hitting the key “k”
Some related remarks: I tend to set the default local adjustments all to 0 (that is, zero), which speeds up the “drawing” process of my local adjustments and review them by hitting the key “o”. Now, after having covered the area(s) I want to adjust I dial in the the actual adjustment values. This speeds up things significantly, though on a MacBookPro with 4GB memory and dual core CPU I don’t have any serious speed issues - almost real time rendering.

Regarding Lightroom 2 glitches _ I find that the right panel freezes when using the crop tool and the whole screen freezes regularly when in grid or develop mode and the use of slideshow module is nowhere near as responsive as LR 1.4.
Lightroom 1.4 was an eager friend but Lightroom 2 is far from it.

Come to think of it Lightroom 2 is more sluggish than the Beta version was. Theres no point providing great new tools and features if the performance drops to a level this bad.

While you are answering questions, can you tell us about plug-ins for LR2. I know that was one of the new features but haven’t seen any available yet. Would like to see noise and HDR plug-ins.

Nice lens collection (even if there are fictional ones in there).
Tomas… I have used LR Enfuse… it does work and its really not bad considering price but IMHO… you won’t get the results that are possible with Photomatix and its worth the extra cost I think. If Photomatix could develop a plugin to work within LR… that would be a mac daddy of a plugin IMHO

I’ve found the adjustment brush gets less sluggish if you turn off the automask option. Obviously there are times to turn it on, but so far I find I’m happier with it off most of the time.
Haven’t experienced any other major glitches, either. Definitely nothing that has made me want to go back to LR1.

I backup images from my MAC to MOZY online storage from where I can restore images from anywhere.
I’m starting to run low on hard drive space on my MAC. Do you have a workflow model for transferring image files to an external hard drive?
I assume the best is to load new images from the camera flash card to the computer and at what point should the images be moved to an external drive?
This leaves me with all images at MOZY unlimited space, part of it on external drive and another part on computer. I backup the development settings catalogue the same way.
Appreciate your advice

We met at Scott Hargis’ workshop out in LA. Great day!
I have a question about printer profiles for printers that are not connected to my computer.
For example, if I want to print at my local Costco (just an example) - I can download a printer profile for their printer. I then put it in my Library > ColorSynch > Profiles folder. Under the Print Job panel (Printer module) Lightroom finds it, and I select it as my active profile.
The problem is that to print at Costco, I must upload a jpg. When I export a JPG, is it following the printer profile to create the JPG to the managed color profile of the printer?

Hey Matt,
I have some quick questions. If someone brings you an old 16×20 or larger print and wants it restored, what lens would you recommend using to capture a digital raw image of that picture? The other question is, how much work would you do to the image there in Lightroom? You do great work. Keep it up.

Hi Matt.
I would like to make a two-line identity plate so that each 4×6 photo would have, in its upper left hand corner, the name of the event over the date of the event. Creating the second line is easy on my friend’s mac (just hit option-return after the first line) but I can’t get this to work on my pc. Alt-return simply closes the identity plate box (cntrl-return and cntrl-alt-return don’t work either.) Any ideas?

Hi Matt,
I am using LR2 trial (I have LR1) and my exported jpegs will not upload to Flickr. My other photos go up just fine. I wonder if you or anyone else has had this issue.

Matt, have you heard when an LR2 fix will be available for opening and editing images as smart objects in PS3. What about a fix for doing other edits using PS3 from LR2?

Hi Matt, Not sure if this is the right spot, but I see all kind of questions here, so… I have a question about selecting photos and assigning keywords or ratings or flags. What I would expect is that you can select multiple photos from the filmstrip and then enter a keyworde to assign that to all sepected photos. Or apply the same flag or rating to the selected ones. It (lightroom) only assigns that to the one “really selected” photos, where your sursor was on, and not to the other ones. Is there an easy way to do (something like) this? Thanks a lot!

On September 6th Bill Millios asked about using Costco printer profiles. I am also interested in a workflow that will allow me to match the colors I see on my calibrated monitor with the prints from Costco.
