Some Links, Inspiration and a Flickr Group

First off, the folks over at Adobe have launched a Lightroom community help site or, as they call it, a “wiki”. Seriously, do they ever sleep there? Anyway, I was extremely honored because at the last Photoshop World in Las Vegas, I met with a few of the Adobe folks and they asked if I was interested in participating by making some quick 30-60 second videos that people could watch quickly (fast being the whole idea behind a “wiki”). So as you’re looking through the site for Lightroom help you may even hear a familiar voice here or there. Here’s the link.

We have our own Flickr group. Yep, one of the visitors to this site created a Flickr group to show off photos that you apply my presets to. As the creator of these presets I can’t tell you how cool that is and it really made my day on Monday when I found out. Here’s the link. Make sure you get in and join the group and start posting some photos. Thanks to everyone who has already posted and thanks to Sznerchu for creating the group.

Finally, here’s a little inspiration to wrap things up. Pay Jill Greenberg Photography a visit when you get a chance today. I recently got a question from somebody asking how to produce an effect in one of her photos. Then I went to her site and realized I’ve been seeing her work everywhere - I just never knew it was all from the same person. There’s a little bit of everything and I think once you hit the site you’ll wind up spending the next 20 minutes there like I did. Well that’s it for today. See you back tomorrow for the Friday Tip.

It’s Preset Monday! (on Tuesday again)

This time around I’ve got my take on a nostalgic-styled effect for the Develop module. This preset gives you that older look and is slightly tinted. I’ve also boosted the contrast and clarity significantly because that seems to be what was missing from some of the presets included with Lightroom. You’ll see that there are 2 presets included. Each one has a different level of color saturation. However, this preset (like most of the others I release here) relies on you processing your photo first. That means setting the white balance, exposure, blacks, etc. (I try not to mess with that stuff in my presets). So have at it and enjoy. As always, comments are welcome and links to pages where you use these effects are even better. Thanks!

We have a winner (or two)!

Well folks, we have a winner. In fact, we have two. There was such an overwhelming response that I thought I’d throw in another copy signed by Scott. So here they are. You’ll get an email soon:

- Henrik (from Norway)
- Mark Segal (from I have no idea where)

Thanks for participating (and for buttering me up with all those nice comments). I wish I could have given one to everybody. If you didn’t win you can always pick one up over at Amazon (by the way, the book hit the top 30 of all books on Amazon today). Congrats to Scott for a great book and congrats to the winners. Take care.

A New Must-Have Book (and a contest!)

I’m making this one short and sweet because it speaks for itself. Scott Kelby’s “The Digital Photography Book - Volume 2″ has just come out. If it’s not on your must-have list yet, then it should be. Here’s 3 reasons why:

1. The Digital Photography Book Volume 1 was absolutely fantastic. It’s one of the few books I read each year that leave me wanting more. This one did, and Volume 2 is the “more”. It picks up with all the things I wanted to learn after Volume 1.

2. I already have a job - reading books ain’t one of them - and this book is a total pleasure to read. It’s got killer information packed into 1 page layouts that make it easy for me to feel like I’ve actually read and learned something.

3. Volume 1 of the book is still in the top 100 of ALL books on Amazon after 18 months. It’s got nearly 400 reviews (and almost every one is 5 stars). I don’t know about you but that’s enough for me to want volume 2 as well.

So go buy one. Now! I’m waiting. Just kiddin’ - here’s the link if you want to find out more. Now the contest. Edit: Note that the contest is over. See above post “We have a winner”. I’ll get a copy of the book signed by Scott and send it out to the winner. Just leave a comment to this post. All you have to do is say “Hi” or something like that but make sure you use your real email address (it won’t be published) so I can get in touch with you. I’ll randomly draw a name from the list on Friday afternoon and post it here. Good luck.

Now go to the next post of the Friday tip ‘o the week.

Friday Tip - Auto Stacks

That weekend time is upon us again and I know mine will be a great one. Why? Because any weekend that I don’t have to run 26 miles is a good weekend :) OK, here’s the tip. Wanna save some time when trying to organize your photos into stacks? Let Lightroom do it. There’s a little known option hidden in the Stacking menu in Lightroom’s Library module. It’s called Auto-Stack by Capture Time. When you choose it you get a simple dialog with one slider. When you move it to the left you get more stacks because Lightroom uses less time as a reference between captures. When you move it to the right you get fewer stacks because Lightroom allows more time between captures. The coolest thing is that it automatically computes how many stacks you’ll end up with and how many unstacked photos you’ll wind up with right in the dialog before it stacks them. You have to be in the Library module and go under Photo > Stacking to find it. Well that’s it for this week. Have a great weekend.
